My rating: 4/10
The good: this book has literally been sitting on my
TBR list for 10 fucking years. And I have FINALLY gotten around to
reading it. Also, the ending of this book did hit me in the feels quite a bit.
The bad: this book was just all-round meh. The concept
of this book – with Jem being able to read the death dates of people just by
looking into their eyes – is such a fascinating
concept and unfortunately Rachel Ward largely missed the mark with adapting it.
Instead of exploring the intricacies of what having this gift means and how the
burden of this superpower affects Jem and her relationships, Numbers basically
just tells the story of her and this boy running away and falling in love. The
end. That’s it.
This novel does to
some degree explore the philosophical possibilities of determinism and free will,
which I think could have been delved into even deeper. But overall, this book
was such a huge letdown for me.
I genuinely hope that
the second instalment will be a tad better, but I guess we’ll see!
